Director of the Sheldon Public Library
The Sheldon Community Library is seeking a dynamic, creative, and motivated individual to serve as our Director. This is a great role for someone that is passionate about community involvement and is able to manage all areas of library service.
The Director reports to the Library Board of Trustees and is responsible for the administration of all library functions within the goals, guidelines, and policies established by the Library Board of Trustees. The Director is also responsible for the facilities, financial management, and personnel of the library, under the governance and oversight of the board. The Director is expected to provide a leadership role within the library, the community, and the library profession. The Director serves as the official representative of the library.
Must meet State Library of Iowa Certification Levels IV, V, or VI. See the Public Library Standards for additional details.
- Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. The candidate must also have or be able to obtain (within first two years of employment) certificate of completion of Public Library Management 1 and 2 OR a college credit course in each of the four areas: library administration, selection of all types of library materials, organization of library materials, reference and information services.
- Candidate must have a graduate degree in library or information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.
~ Prior library experience is preferred.
~ Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of all facets of public library service.
~ Ability to think analytically and critically with strong problem solving skills.
~ Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
~ Experience in developing and managing the library budget and finances.
~ Considerable knowledge of computers and data communications especially in regards to library applications.
~ Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
~ Strong verbal and written communication skills, social skills, and adaptability.
~ Ability to make administrative decisions, develop policies and supervise staff.
~ Creative and diplomatic management abilities.
~ Ability to motivate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, volunteers, other community agencies, governmental bodies and the general public.
~ Experience planning and implementing library programs.
~ A desire to meet and serve the public in all facets of library operations.
~ Understanding of and dedication to excellent customer service.
The full-time position includes some evening and weekend hours and includes health insurance, IPERS (Iowa Public Employees Retirement System), vacation, holiday pay, and personal/sick days.
Salary commensurate with experience.
